CE Quiz #4.4
1. How much more money could it cost Travis County drivers to register their car next year? Page A1 "Twin bills would pay..."
It would $10 extra dollars onto of the current fee.
2. How much does a cubic foot of snow weigh? How much does a cubic foot of ice weigh? Why is this important? Page A2 "New England roofs fail..."
A cubic foot of snow weighs 8 pounds but a cubic foot of ice weighs around 64 pounds. As snow falls on rooftops in England, they turn into ice and grow heavier. This increases the amount of rooftops collapsing on homes, buildings, and various structures.
3. What is the political cartoon by Dana Summers on page A11 trying to say, in your opinion?
To me, the trainer looks like our president and the wrestler he has been "training" is all of the Us or its military. The rather large, muscular one represents ISIS- a horrible terrorist group that has been threatening the US for quite some time now. In all, the cartoon is saying our weak president is kinda just saying we're "prepared to fight this big danger when really… we're not. We have no leadership nor guidance from our president and from the looks of our scrawny, older Uncle Bill we don't have a very good chance of winning these three matches. Not one match! Three.
4. What are some of the objects that Maureen Gilman added to her garden to give it more of a "family" feel? Page SA3 "Artifacts added to..."
(This was a very interesting article by the way.) Some of the artifacts Mrs.Gilman used were some metal landscape decorations, a wagon wheel, a battered anvil, and petal-like blades of a windmill.
5. What was the primary mode of advertising for music clubs in Austin's past AND which of the 8 pictured was your favorite? Page D1 (Austin 360) "Homegrown"
The primary mode was to forget the uncensored blast via social media and focus on art posters that would be plastered around the city. (I LOVE this idea so much. I can't tell you how much social media is such a pain in my ass and art is an expressive way to catch attention for music.) My favorite poster was the Gilbert Shelton one for its sixties/seventies style and hope the words kind of flow with the texture. I also liked the Willie Nelson one because, gosh, Willie is just awesome. :)
Short Answer:
The lead story in the Statesman today is about same-sex marriage. Please read the first part of the story on Page 1, if you want to read the entire story please do, but you don't need it to answer the question below.
What do you think about same-sex marriage? Should it be legal? Should a man be able to marry another man, or a woman to marry another woman? WHY or WHY NOT?
Wow, talk about controversy! This is definitely something I've thought about for a long time. Since the issue surfaced I've been thinking about it and trying to find where I stand. I'm the type of person who wants everyone to be themselves. I want people to do what makes them happy, what puts a smile on their face and make their hearts bloom and beat. If same sex couples want to be married for this to happen then I'm all for it. But then there is the fact that marriage has always been a special thing between a man and a woman only. The breaking of that rule begins to bend the definition of marriage. Oh, and then there's freedom which we are pleased with in this country and that comes up in these arguments as well… And sometimes I wonder if there could be an alternative solution we can create that is similar to marriage for same sex couples without angering the ones who stand for keeping the definition of marriage how it has always been.
In the end, everyone deserves to be happy and to be with their significant other. Love is a precious, fragile thing. It needs to be dealt with carefully and with lots of thought. So… I don't think I've found where I stand in this argument. But I will say my wish is for everyone to be content and pleased with the one they love. Because no matter what the sexuality, race, age, or gender of someone they deserve the same treatment and privileges the person next to them does.

Photography
1. What is your favorite photo in the entire paper?
My favorite photo was the one from the Evita article, of Giselle Lozano
1A. Why is this your favorite?
I love the colors in the photo as well as how the subject is framed around the other girls.
1B. What rules of photo composition are evident?
Framing, Rule of Thirds
2. What is your least favorite photo in the entire paper?
I'm going to have to say my least favorite was the one of Hailey Walker in the softball article, in Sports.
2A. Why is this your least favorite?
The subject's feet are cut off, there's a lot of commotion and action going on in the background, and it's a bit blurry.
3. If you were a photographer on staff, which event/photo assignment would you have liked to do for this issue? You will need to look through the entire paper and see the topics covered and decide which one you think would have been fun.
The Evita article would have been something I'd love to cover and take photos for.
4. Overall, how would you rate the photography in this issue? What were the strong points and weak points.
Out of five stars I'd say 3.5. There were some really good photos in here but the cropping of the photos could be worked on. I also think improving overall skills of basic photography rules would make a major impact on the photography.

Africa and Abandoned Theme Parks
The photographer's (Nick Brandt) words and thoughts are beautiful. Not only is he talented in the art of photography- he is also brilliantly eloquent! I'm quite surprised by how passionate he was by this, having to wait days or weeks to get one specific photo. It must have been an incredible adventure he embarked.
This photo is mesmerizing. At first I thought this photo had to be photoshopped, but it actually is not. I love the lighting coming through the clouds and how well the giraffes were set in this photograph. It's almost too pretty to be… well, real!
I definitely see rule of thirds. Even though there are multiple giraffes in this photograph, the main subject is the animal closest to the lens, on the far right. Also, the horizon is around the bottom line that is used with Rule of Thirds.
Brandt uses a Pentax 67II with only two fix lenses. This is important for how he has to get close to the animals to capture their features. It also creates the old look to the photographs, adding a beautiful effect.
He fell in love with the animals of Eastern Africa while filming in Tanzania. He knew he couldn't capture how much he loved these animals with just film, so he decided to use photography as a replacement.
Brandt wants to show people these animals in their state of living- of being. It is not about trying to get action or drama of them, but more simplicity, more of how these animals are just naturally. He wants to capture these moments before their Being is gone.
"To me, every creature, human or nonhuman, has an equal right to live, and this feeling, this belief that every animal and I are equal, affects me every time I frame an animal in my camera. The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes." - Nick Brandt

Chippewa Lake Park, Medina County, Ohio is definitely the one I would like to go take photos at. The big hippie I am, I love anything old and to do with nature. This amusement park is filled with plants, trees, natural wreckage, and plenty of vines climbing over everything. The park also seems to blend in with the park's old wooden rides. It's very eerie!
1. Abandoned Hospitals
2. Caves (Water, Underground, etc.)
3. Abandoned Mansions
4. Dark, Dense Forests
5. Contemporary Art Museums
I love, love forests and the woods. Being able to go to a creepy, dense, dark forest like this one while creating beautiful photos there? That sounds lovely, lovely, lovely. I'd want to take scenery shots of the land and its elements, also possibly having a model and creating unique art with nature and the person with it.
I would need money for a plane trip, my DSLR camera, and a tripod. I'd also need to find the right forest, do some research on the different ones I'm interested in. The laws that I would use is Fill the Frame and Rule of Thirds. I'd also need to find a place to stay and plan out how long I'd be there to shoot the photos.

People having guns is the main reason things like shootings begin. I don't believe open carry of a gun should be allowed for every single person on the street and have it with them at all times. It just doesn't seem like a good idea to me, being the worrier I am always. I see lots of mistakes and bad consequences in having handguns on everyone.
